I am currently completing a paper on temperance and 'modernity' in Edwardian Britain and have been asked to provide a little context to my discussion of the views of Sir George White, VP of the United Kingdom Alliance and President of the Baptist Total Abstinence Society. White's views were very strongly ifluenced by William Hoyle's book _Our Natural Resources and How They are Wasted_ first published in 1871. My question is how widespread were Hoyle's ideas? I have come across one other major paraphrase of his work in Dr Kate Mitchell's _The Drink Question_ (1891) but would be especially interested to know if they feature in Rowntree and Sherwell's 1897 pamphlet or any other writings by 'radical paternalists' like Cadbury. Hope you can help. Barry Doyle University of Edinburgh [log in to unmask]
