Just received a note from John J. Guthrie, Jr., who teaches history
at Daytona Beach Community College, with (in addition to a generous
review of my Good Templar book that appeared in the Florida
Historical Quarterly) a flyer on his forthcoming book. It is called
Keepers of the Spirits: The Judicial Response to Prohibition
Enforcement in Florida, 1885-1935 (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press;
ISBN 0-313-30190-5, $59.95). I said forthcoming but now see that the
publication date is 31 January 1998! In any event, the chapters
include: Historians and the Liquor Laws; Local Option to National
Prohibition, 1885-1920; Concurrent Enforcement of the Liquor Laws,
1905-1922; Prohibition and Privacy Rights, 1921-1930; The Judicial
Check on Property Forfeiture, 1921-1930; National Prohibition to
Local Option, 1928-1935.
