I drove west from Columbus to see if the Ross's Goose was still at Old Reid Park. It wasn't,so I drove to the Reservoir across the street where I saw 10-15 Common Loons (many quite close). Also close to the shore was a Horned Grebe. It had its golden ear tufts but its neck was neither black nor rufous. I studied my guides and photos on internet before deciding it was a Horned Grebe and not an Eared Grebe (not to say I couldn't still be wrong). Back at Old Reid Park I finally got the Ross's Goose. It had come out of the water to eat some grain that someone had provided and I got great looks. This is a good place to see waterfowl up close without needing a scope (which I don't have). I had other close-up looks at Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Lesser Scaup, Pied-billed Grebe, Mute Swan and many types of mixed breed Mallards and geese. A stop at Prairie Oaks Metropark on my way home yielded some Ring-necked Ducks and Blue-winged Teal. If anyone
wants company to go chase rarities (day trips) as they occur, I'm up for splitting expenses.
