115 species were observed in a little less than six hours this morning from lake Erie Bluffs in Lake County. The long awaited southwest winds really pushed a lot of birds through. Of note were a singing clay-colored sparrow, Franklin's gull, and 3 red knots. There were a lot of diurnal migrants in some pretty incredible numbers. Highlights were 371 eastern kingbirds, 18,500+ blue jays, 196 Baltimore Orioles, 54 indigo buntings, 680 chimney swifts, 1000+ swallows, 3640 cedar waxwings, and 132 bobolinks.
Lake Erie Bluffs- Clark Road, Lake, Ohio, US
May 17, 2017 6:15 AM - 11:45 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: After 2 weeks of north and east winds we finally got some strong southwest winds of 20-30 mph. Most of the observations were done from the top of a 50 foot tower along the lake. Songbirds were moving constantly and only started to slow down around 11:00. Blue jays, woodpeckers, and blackbirds were heading east. Kingbirds, orioles, swallows, swifts, and bobolinks were heading west. There were a lot of warblers moving the first couple hours that were too far to hear and identify.
