Quick stops at several spots around the Scioto River gorge in Dublin
produced quite a few interesting birds, including many traditionally 'late'
warblers. I stopped at Kiwanis Park, Koscuiscko Park, and O'Shaughnessy
Dam - the first two in the morning, the latter in the afternoon. Water
levels along the river here are quite low, accounting for quite a few
herons, egrets, and cormorants along the river. Notables included:
Herons,Egrets - Kiwanis had 8 Great Blues & 4 Great Egrets, while
Koscuiscko had a Great Egret and Green Heron (and it doesn't even have
river frontage!)
Hummingbirds - had them at all 3 stops
Flycatchers - Pewees & Great Crested were widespread. Kiwanis and the Dam
had Kingbirds, while Koscuiscko had 2 Acadians
Vireos - Red-eyed were common at all 3 sites, and Kiwanis also had several
Warbling
Thrushes - Swainsons were at all 3 sites, and Kiwanis & Koscuiscko also had
Woods
Warblers - no great numbers, but several 'last-wave' warblers including a
singing Connecticut (Kiwanis), Mourning (Koscuiscko), Canada (Kiwanis), and
Wilson's (Kiwanis, Koscuiscko). Also had Yellow, Prothonotary (Kiwanis),
Yellow-throated, Yellow-rumped, Magnolia, Redstarts, Ovenbird,
ComYellowthroats
Tanagers - singing Scarlets were at Koscuiscko and the Dam
Orioles - plenty of Baltimores at every site, but no Orchards here.
