After reading all the recent posts about Common Redpolls everywhere BUT my back yard, it was nice to finally meet up with a few.
I had to drop by GIAC today and was greeted by an American Kestrel just off of the parking lot.
I left at 3:00 and went into Greenlawn Cemetery to find a few birds before the rain arrives. In general, it was quiet everywhere but the pit, where the feeders were swarming with birds.
It was a great opportunity to work on ID skills with downy and hairy woodpeckers side by side; red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches side by side; redpolls, pine siskins, and American goldfinches all on a thistle feeder together.....also able to watch the redpolls on the thistle feeder, the sunflower seed feeder, in the trees, and foraging on the ground. They remained for the full hour I was there. There were many woodpeckers, and multiples of everything except the mockingbird and crow. With five feeders, the ground, and the trees to scan, there was action everywhere I looked. Delightful way to break up the cloudy afternoon.
Birds seen at feeders: (16)
Pine Siskins, small flock
Common Redpolls, 6
House Finch
American Goldfinch
White-throated Sparrow
Dark-eyed Junco
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Mockingbird
Carolina Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Northern Cardinal
American Crow (flew over)
Canada Goose (flew over)
