Several days each week I drive around the block in the NW corner of Madison
County over my lunch hour. It has been interesting to note the changes in the
composition of roadside flocks the past few days. Two weeks ago the many flocks
of Horned Larks had only a few Snow Buntings and Longspurs, possibly one in
ten. Today, the Snow Bunting numbers were still that number but the Longspurs
were close to half of all the birds. Most of the Longspurs were in total winter
plumage but quite a few were really beautiful. I hope I get to see them on
their breeding grounds sometime.
Get out and enjoy the winter birding.
