I visited Lake Hope State Park & Zaleski State Forest. I had the 20
breeding Warblers & 11 migrants(including Mourning, Connecticut ) In the
Shelter woods I had a male Chestnut-sided Warbler(singing) with a female.I
also flushed a Ruff Grouse. However the most exciting part of my day was a
Black Bear. I was walking down a road & I heard something breathing hard
from a thicket. My dog(Akeena) was behind me looking at where the sound was
coming from. She is never behind me!! We slowly walked backwards a 100
yards. I looked in the thicket but no sighting. I slowly walked down the
road again, constantly asking Akeena if everything was OK . She just smiled
& wagged her tail. I looked up Black Bear Vocalizations-Apprehensive
expressions-Forceful expulsions of air. A friend had a young Bear on Big
Four Rd last week.
