Yesterday, my wife & I had to go to Castalia for our annual visit to our accountant. Since we had plenty of time & I was driving we didn't follow the usual route.
From Toledo, I drove down Woodville Road, turning right (south) onto I-280. We drove on it past the Turnpike about a mile onto OH 163, where we turned to the right (east). About halfway to crossing under the Turnpike, where the road was skinny & right next to a very deep ditch, a longspur flew across the road in front of me. While he was side towards me & I couldn't identify him as to species, he had a very white tail, probably a Chestnut collared or McCown's. The road was too skinny to stop & too well travelled.
Further on down 163, near were Elliston/Towbridge crosses, I saw my first Harrier of the year. We turned East on OH 2, but didn't see much until we crossed Sandusky Bay & they were mostly Ring-billed Gulls. Getting to Castalia early, we ate our lunch looking at the ducks, etc. in the pond. Lots of Canvasbacks, lots of geese on shore, a couple of mute swans, and an assortment of other ducks. I saw my first coots of the year, but studying one of them, I discovered it was a Moor Hen, a pleasant surprise.
After spending an hour with the accountant, we picked up our grandson, who lives in town & drove to Margaritaville for dinner with some other family members. While eating, we watched 2 fishermen out the window, along with some Mallards, a Lesser Scaup & a Canada Goose. Soon the smallest Canvasback, I have ever seen came along. Swimming next to the Mallards he looked like a teal in size. Soon 3 or 4 females (or young) came & joined the male. They, too, were very small & didn't look anything like the females I had seen earlier at the pond. Their sides looked like they were streaked with grease. I thought, could they be Pouchards? As I recalled, their heads were supposed to look like Redheads & these looked like Canvasbacks. I didn't have my guide with me. I feel kind of stupid right now. I had a camera in my pocket. I used it to take our relatives pictures just minutes before. I didn't have sense enough to take the bird's pictures, even if it was a cheapie. Especially,
since this morning I looked at the guide & saw that a Pouchard's head was the same shape as a Canvasbacks.
If anyone wants to check it out, Margaritaville has fine Mexican food. It is right on the river that comes from Castalia Pond. I think it's right on US 6, almost in Sandusky.
After finishing eating, 3 of us drove down to the mouth of the stream, where it enters Lake Erie. It had lots of ducks, lots of gulls, including 2 or more Thayers, 2 mute swans & a coot.
We also drove down to Huron. We saw my first Sharp-shin of the year and a flock of Rusty Blackbirds containing my first cowbird of the year.
Not bad for a trip to the accountant.
