After chasing all over to see crossbills, I saw snow being knocked out of
hemlocks as I filled feeders after school.I figured it was a raiding
squirrel, but instead it was a male and female WW crossbill! Right in
Chardon a block from the high school! They dug into those cones for over
half an hour. So if you have conifers, keep your eyes open; and if you
don't, you should consider planting some! I have blue and Norway spruce,
Douglasfir, hemlock, scotch and white pine, Fraser and white fir, juniper
and arborvitae, all on 1/2 acre lot. Between the conifers and my feeders,
the birding is usually better in my yard than most parks. Plus the privacy
is darn good for a corner lot on Maple! I started most of my trees from
inexpensive packets sold by the Soil and Water Conservation office. If you
plant them, they will come...
