I am feeding suet for the first time this summer and find that sparrows are all over it like a duck on a junebug! With the feeder I'm using I've been able to feed without the squirrel pigs but now the sparrow pigs are inhaling that stuff. I would much prefer to attract a wider variety of species than just sparrows. I have seen one downy woodpecker (twice), a black capped chickadee (once), and a white breasted nuthatch (once) but none of these birds seem to stay long and, I suspect, are nearly driven away by the sparrow pig hoard.
Does anyone have any guidance on what I can do to attract a wider variety (read that: "get rid of the sparrow pig hoard"). I don't mind feeding the sparrows but I'd like to have something for the other bird species too. I've tried different types of suet blends but nothing changes. Should I use a different holder for the suet? IOW... one that doesn't allow their short beaks to get to the suet?
