Five American Avocets arrived at "The Sandspit" about 10AM. Within minutes, an amphibious craft crossing the sandspit went right thru them. They flushed and flew east out over the far breakwall, fortunately they did a turn and came back to the sandspit. The Red Knot is being cooperative for the photographers, but is having to dodge numerous amphibious craft as they cross the sandspit. Some of the other new arrivals since the earlier post are Short-billed Dowitchers, Sanderlings, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Killdeer, and Bonaparte's Gulls. Of note, these are the first avocets of the fall in non-breeding plumage, without buffy color on the heads. It is 10:40AM and things are beginning to get crazy out here.

Bob Lane / Mahoning County
