I spent the last 4 days on Kelley's Island in an attempt to monitor
migrating Northern Saw-whet Owls. My efforts were unrewarded, much to my
surprise. Evidently, the birds are not migrating across the lake in
numbers, yet ! A southern Ohio station has banded 6 birds to date this fall
and a bird at Mentor Headlands seem to be the only saw-whets around. I will
be on Kelley's for the next three weekends trying.
Other bird highlights were:
24+ Common Loons - most showed up on Monday (10/30)
75+ Horned Grebes - showed up on Monday (10/30)
1 Lesser Scaup - 10/31 female
6 Surf Scoters - 10/30 and 10/31 o north side of island
east of state park
115+ Bufflehead - showed up on Monday
1 Merlin - 10/30
1 Common Tern - 10/28
3 Eastern Phoebe - 10/30
1 Red-eyed Vireo - 10/30
1 Indigo Bunting - 10/30
