A couple friends and I visited Killdeer Plains today to look for the
shorebirds that Steve Jones reported. We found them at the west end of Pond
27. Here is a list of what we found. Some of the numbers were estimates as
many of the shorebirds were too far away to identify even with a scope.
1 Black-bellied Plover
25 Semipalmated Plover
75 Killdeer
2 Spotted Sandpiper
5 Solitary Sandpiper
1 Greater Yellowlegs
70 Lesser Yellowlegs
1 Stilt Sandpiper
30 Least Sandpiper
25 Pectoral Sandpiper
2 Wilson's Snipe
We also had a couple other interesting finds. On Road 115 just north of
C-75, four Bobolinks flew over us. Then on C-71 between T-108 and T-123 we
heard a Henslow's Sparrow although we couldn't spot it. On Pond 3 there were
two families of Pied-billed Grebes.
