For the second Saturday in a row, Paula and I took a birding trip and
without leaving the car, we observed over 50 species. In fact, this week we
had 53 species, spent less time and traveled only 150 miles. We drove
northeast from Tiffin through the back roads of Seneca County, to Castalia,
Marblehead peninsula, East Harbor State Park and back. Castalia still has a
good selection of waterfowl. Best birds of the day were 2 Savannah Sparrows
on Twp. Road 80 just south of Co. Rd. 46 in Thompson Township which is south
of Bellevue, Ohio. 8+ Great Blue Heron and 1 Double-crested Cormorant were
in a small area of open water on the northeast side of the Edison Bridge
over Sandusky Bay. The open water of Lake Erie on the north side of the
Marblehead peninsula had hundreds of Canvasback, Common Goldeneye, and
Common Merganser. The back roads of Seneca County and Sandusky County had
numerous flocks of Horned Larks and Lapland Longspurs. But no Snow Buntings
were observed.
