This morning a Red-necked Grebe was near the road at Lower Clear Fork
bay on Tappan Lake. Although I am completely unfamiliar with the species,
the yellow mandible, size, and its plumage made me go to the books.
Its plumage looked most like a female or possibly first winter bird.
While watching the bird, I observed it surface with a large-mouth bass
fingerling and briefly thought I might see my first RNGR die from
gluttony. However, she swallowed the fish easily.
It appears to have been a one hour wonder as a fellow birder could
not locate it an hour later and I also had no luck tonight.
The flooded fields in the area also held 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 15
Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper and 1 Spotted Sandpiper.
As of last Thursday, Short-eared owls are still being seen near New
Athens.
