I just heard a disturbance among the birds, and checking out the source of the
alarms, I located an accipiter (I think a Coop) on the ground in the woods, starting
to pluck a downy/or hairy. In spite of the considerable scolding
and squeaking that surrounded him and inspite of my approach he
remained intent on his task.
.
There are usually cooper’s nests in the vicinity. (The wooded 40 acres.)
I started wondering how the presumed male delivers food to
the nest…..will he pluck it and then carry the entire bird to the nest?
Or does he carry bits and pieces back and forth, leaving the valuable
carcass on the forest floor? Leave it only if it is too heavy to fly with?
