I ventured out in the ice-cold weather to look for waterbirds at Lake Snowden this morning. A juvenile tundra Swan with a pink bill was in the company of Canada Geese, and later joined an adult bird with a black bill further out on the lake. Please check out the pictures on the eBird list below and let me know if you think it might NOT be a Tundra. Also, there were several Gadwalls, two American Wigeons, Mallards, some Ring-necked Ducks, a few Hooded Mergansers, a Pied-billed Grebe, and a hundred American Coots. A Wilson’s Snipe was feeding in plain view, closely followed by a friendly Coot.

Earlier, I checked the Hocking River at the Habitat House in Athens and found a pair of Hooded Mergansers. Wintering watering birds are back, even in SE Ohio!
