Saw a great show Sunday night of approximately 10-15 Short Eared Owls at
Big Island, from about 4:30-dark. Approximately 4 were hunting against a
very beautiful sunset on Espyville Rd. Unfortunately, I was so excited I
forgot to turn up the ISO on my camera and instead instinctively kept
slowing the shutter to deal with the darkness. I ended up with a bunch of
blurry "almost" good shots :) But I had a great time!
I was also very excited to get the closest shot I have ever taken of a
Kestrel, and my first ever pics of a Merlin, a male Harrier, and possibly
a Rough Legged Hawk (I still have to identify that one for sure).
I usually spend my time at Kildeer when photographing birds when I get
down from the Akron region, and I am very happy that we went over to Big
Island instead this time.
Has anyone seen Short Eared Owls at Kildeer this year? My parents and I
used to see large numbers (in the twenties) there commonly about 5 years
ago before I moved north. I haven't heard anything about Kildeer owls
lately though.
Also, does anyone know of a good spot to see owls near Akron?
Thanks!
