US and UK Birding Friends:
I hope even my tardiest acquaintances have sent their Christmas cards
by now so I have compiled my annual Christmas Card Bird List (all
birds shown on cards, including e-cards, and their envelopes). They
are listed below in order of abundance. Once again, the European
Robin dominates (mostly sent from European addresses) with the
Northern Cardinal again in second place (largely on cards of North
American origin).
European Robin Erithacus rubecula 26
Northern Cardinal Cardinalis cardinalis 9
Rook Corvus frugilegus 6
Generic Dove Columba obscurus 5
Badly-drawn Hummingbird Trochilus malscriptus 4
Blue Tit Parus caeruleus 3
Barn Owl Tyto alba 2
Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri 2
Red-crowned Crane Grus japonensis 2
Great Tit Parus major 2
Great Egret Egretta alba 1
Snowy Egret Egretta thula 1
Canada Goose Branta canadensis 1
(Winter) Wren Troglodytes troglodytes 1
Blue-winged Warbler Vermivora pinus 1
Green Jay Cyanocorax yncas 1
Robin-like Nonexistent Bird Erithacus closebutnocigarus 1
Silly-looking Penguin Spheniscus disneyii 1
Good birding in 2009!
