Tim & I spent yesterday & today looking for Smith's Longspurs in the area
just west of Rockford. Yesterday we saw thousands of Laplands, today just a
couple hundred. But no Smith's. Other exciting birds included several Vesper
Sparrows, tons of Horned Larks, some American Pipets, a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker and the big surprise of the day: 42 American Golden Plovers (1 flock
of ~25 on Now Rd and another of flock of 17 on Manly Rd.)
We also went to Grand Lake St Marys to look for the Long-tailed Duck (didn't
find) and the Ross' Goose (did). Along with at least 20 Common Loons, maybe a
thousand American Coots, several Blue-winged Teal, & 2 Common Mergaqnsers. A
total of 13 species of waterfowl.
It was a good trip...just seeing thousands of Lapland Longspurs, most in
breeding plumage, was absolutely worth it.
