With a spare hour this morning, I stopped around the dam and nearby Nature Trail. There were quite a few waterbirds in the reservoir, including flocks of scaup, mergansers, and Bonaparte's Gulls, so a waterbird flight appears underway. I could not find any scoters, but I didn't have that much time for checking all the flocks. Landbird migrants were paltry by comparison. The list included:
Lesser Scaup - 100+, in several flocks
Redhead - 2 with one of the scaup flocks
Bufflehead - 14 playing around in the dam spillway (and yes, it did look like playing...)
Red-br.Mergansers - 50+ in several groups above the dam
Hooded Mergansers - 20+, mostly in pairs above the dam
Horned Grebe - 15+, mostly near the dam
Bonaparte's Gulls - 120+ all over the lower reservoir. This is a conservative estimate.
Ring-billed Gulls - 60+, mostly in the dock flocks near the dam
Pileated Woodpecker - 1 calling along the Hoover Nature Trail
E.Phoebe - 1 calling along the Nature Trail
Tree Swallows - 2 flying around the reservoir near the dam
E.Towhee - 2 singing in the prairie restoration along the Hoover Nature Trail
White-throated Sparrows - scarce, with only 4-5 around the dam & Nature Trail
Fox Sparrow - 1 singing in the prairie along the Nature Trail
Juncos - still small flocks in several spots
Cowbirds - 6+ in singles and pairs at several locations
