This weekend I stayed pretty close to home here in eastern Mahoning Co. doing yardwork and getting ready for a family trip to central Louisiana next week. But the local patch was not boring. Saturday I noticed only a few of the expected raptors overhead, with little definite migration. The one kettle of birds I did get a little excited over turned out to be ~20 gulls (mostly herrings). Their behavior was exactly what I would have expected from a kettle of raptors! I've seen gulls soaring plenty of times, but not such a perfect formation as this over dry land. This morning, I observed one of a pair of red-shouldered hawks doing it's best falcon impersonation when it dive-bombed an intruding red-tailed hawk. I was really surprised by the pair's overall level of agressiveness. My FOS e. phoebe was heard this morning in Coitsville Twp. I tallied 29 song sparrows (most only heard) up in Coitsville also. Later, Craig
