There were few birds active at mid-day today. The surprise was Common Merganser in the pond west of the path. It appeared to be molting and in eclipse (basic) plumage: flight feathers were short, it took a long time running across the water to get "airborne", and it couldn't fly more than a few yards, getting only a few inches off the water.
