Hello!
Earlier this evening while hiking at Highbanks, my wife and I were
surprised to first hear and then see seven Common Terns flying relatively low over
the biggest loop of the pet trail. They were flying southwest and then
they banked around to the northwest right over our heads. Luckily, I had my
IPod of bird songs with me and was able to confirm the calls as Common
Terns. Other birds observed included about a dozen female and immature Baltimore
Orioles in one tree, three Orchard Orioles mixed in with the Baltimores,
three Kingbirds (one fledgling being constantly fed by a fly-catching
parent), several Eastern Wood Pewees (some surprisingly calling from trees out
in the open in the fields), two Scarlet Tanagers, one Yellow Warbler, and a
Cowbird fledgling following around a female Common Yellowthroat begging for
food. Also, saw 2 immature Cooper's Hawks near the Adena Mound.
Presumably, these are two of the four that fledged from a nest in the old section
of the pet trail near the park entrance. Two nights ago, I heard a pair of
Great-Horned Owls hooting back and forth from a ravine near the Dripping
Rock Trail deck that overlooks the pet trail area. This is the first time
I've heard or seen GHOW's at the park since early this year. Directions to
Highbanks are at _www.metroparks.net_ (http://www.metroparks.net) or can be
accessed on the OOS web site.
