I spent the morning monitoring the Prothonotary Warblers in one of my nest
box zones in Genoa Township. Some days you wonder what you did right to deserve
a show spectacular. I had nine nest sites within a 500-yard stretch and
everyone was being active at once. I selected a nest site where I had a
comfortable place to sit with good lighting and got the camera ready with hopes of
getting some decent shots. I still use my old Nikon F-2 SLR (someday I'll go
digital) and I had a 70-200 zoom lens on it this morning. The Prothonotaries
decided to cooperate and I used up the film I had on me. They did everything but
hold each other and smile. Because of this my bird list for today is rather
short, 18 Prothonotary Warblers (9 males and 9 females), 2 Great Crested
Flycatchers bringing nest materials to a cavity, 3 Veery's and 1 Pileated
Woodpecker.
