Hello,
This Monday morning, I found a dark adult Pomarine Jaeger in the rain at Wendy Park. I walked to the shore to scan the hundreds of Bonaparte's Gulls foraging out near the break wall when I noticed a dark chocolate-brown bird in the water just 50 feet offshore. I quickly identified it as a jaeger. When it noticed me, the jaeger hesitantly raised its wings for a few seconds clearly flashing extensive white in the underwing primaries and a smaller patch of white at the base of the primaries near the primary coverts. It took flight and I watched it for 20 seconds as it headed out toward and eventually beyond the breakwall. In flight, I got a good side profile of rounded central retrices extending beyond the outer retrices. The bird had deep, powerful wingbeats comparable to a large gull's (herring) and a heavy-chested appearance.
Sunday afternoon, I also was able to see the scoters (all 3 species) at Sims Park in Euclid.
This is my first post on the Ohio birds list, but I have been birding for over 15 years in the Midwest, primarily based in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I have recently become a resident of Washington
DC (via Minnesota), but I am in
Ohio about once-monthly to visit family in Cleveland.
