I was out surveying a property in Painesville Township, Lake County along the lake this morning with Amy Wolf from our staff. In a little over three hours we had close to 90 species. There was a tremendous number of birds moving overhead the whole time. We ended up with about 15 species of warblers, best was a KENTUCKY WARBLER. Other birds of note was a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, SEDGE WREN, MARSH WREN, and a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE. We had some great numbers of birds also. We had 4 yellow-breasted chats, 200+ yellow warblers, 60+ common yellowthroats, 25+ palm warblers, 30+ least flycatchers, 3,000+ blue jays, 400+ goldfinches.
Then to top it off we had 16 variegated meadowhawk dragonflies flying alongthe edge of a borrow pit. In about ten years I had seen only about 5-6 of these western strays in Ohio. We also had about 400+ red admiral butterflies and an American snout.
Sorry, the site is on private property. It gives an extent of the migration today though. Not a bad day.
