at least 13 species of warblers, most at mentor lagoons, were found this morning (08/23/2008) in the headlands beach state park area. most unusual were at least 5 male hooded warblers and an early and well-analyzed connecticut warbler. other highlights included several chestnut-sided warblers and black and white warblers. areas with water, and therefore bugs, attracted the migrant warblers. other species of interest included yellow-bellied flycatcher and both species of cuckoo. yesterday, 08,22,2008, at the far end of the beach of the nature preserve, there was a baird's sandpiper in typical immature plumage.
