On 12/17 my first stop of the Wheeling CBC at 6:30a.m. was a mature wooded
hillside with scattered conifers, below was riparian, hilltop and bottom
occaisional open field. I hit the GH Owl call and immediately heard a
series of 8-10 paired barks start very near where I stood and rapidly
trail off to my right. I was certain it was an owl. After discussing it at
the CBC lunch and listening to multiple recordings of owl barks, I believe
it was a Long-eared owl. Since this is an auditory ID, I am intersted in
hearing if anyone on the list may have had a similar experience or if you
think there are other differentials I should consider. I did not have time
to go back and scout the area in daylight but hope to this week. Scott
Pendleton
