I stopped by Conneaut Harbor this morning for a couple hours. There were
only a couple black-bellied plover and semipalmated plovers when I arrived.
After that, small numbers trickled through until I left. The wet area where
the shorebirds had been congregating is dry and all the shorebirds are using
the edge of the mudflat. Without a doubt, the best bird was a RED PHALAROPE
that dropped in and stayed just north of the narrow sandbar where the gulls
usually sit. I was able to watch it in the scope as it floated around the
shallow water and briefly was on the shore there. there were quite a few
gulls there and it was often hidden. In fact it went behind some gulls and
after that I was unable to relocate it. I am not sure when it flew off, but
when an eagle went through about 15 minutes later it was not there. Other
birds seen were 1 adult lesser black-backed gull, 1 great egret, 1 peregrine
falcon and Lapland longspurs.
Shorebirds seen were:
Semipalmated plover 4
Golden plover 3
Black-bellied plover 2
Killdeer 1
Sanderling 3
Ruddy turnstone 2
Semipalmated sandpiper 1
Western sandpiper 2
RED PHALAROPE 1
