This morning at Mudhen Marsh I spent a good deal of time observing a pair
of Red-headed Woodpeckers at the nest site. Both adults were making trip
after trip and putting on an enjoyable show for me. I locate 2 Prothonotary
Warbler nest sites on the south side of Big Walnut Road, both near the
bridge. The majority of the PROW’s nesting at Mudhen are on the north side of the
road and require agility, getting around fallen trees, putting up with
multiflora rose, mud and spider webs. In the brushy area near the trail to the
observation blind there were Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Yellow Warblers,
Common Yellowthroat, White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireo, and a flock of Cedar
Waxwings.
I next went to check the nest boxes at Oxbow Road but was stunned by the
amount of trash left by the Memorial Day weekend fishermen. Mind that only a
small percentage of the fishermen create the trash, much to the dislike of
the majority of the fishermen and myself. Instead of monitoring nest boxes
I collected about 100 gallons of trash . My reward was the constant singing
of the resident male Prothonotary Warblers. One curious male came almost
up to me as if expressing thanks for cleaning the trash. I spotted 9 male
PROW’s while at Oxbow Road and 3 Yellow-billed Cuckoos.
Not the day I planned, but a productive morning.
