Quite cool and overcast in the AM with a cold wind off the lake at Magee. Felt more like a fall day. Had partly sunny skies later which then gave way to more rain late afternoon.

I was disappointed that the road to Metzger Marsh was closed, I presume due to flooding. I also checked out Howard marsh but the water seemed high there too but picked up some Dunlin, a couple semi-palms and some Caspian Terns there. Heard a Greater YL.

Not big numbers but lots of bird activity & great photo opps on the Boardwalk. 16 Warbler species incl lovely Bay-breasted males and Canada’s. Many mixed flocks feeding in near proximity. I did not hear of any Connecticuts being seen.

Saw an interesting interaction between a Prothonotary Warbler and a Tree Swallow over a small nest hole. The warbler was acting somewhat proprietary. When the tree swallow, perched on the nest hole and was inspecting it, the warbler chipped loudly at it and flew at it several times which the tree swallow largely ignored. After poking its head in and out of the hole a couple times, the swallow flew off and the Prothonotary seemed to relax. I didn’t know whether the Prothonotary had already started building a nest there or what exactly was going on but it was kind of cool to watch.

Other highlights for me were calling/seen Least, Yellow-bellied & Willow flycatchers. There were also a few Philadelphia Vireos showing well. Late in the day I finally located a female Mourning Warbler that had been seen earlier, getting brief glimpses in the dark undergrowth but the gray hood and broken eye ring were seen well.

For gen info, the road to the Boardwalk will be closed June 1 to replace 2 bridges. I think the sign said it would be closed for a couple months.
