Today, while having an early Thanksgiving dinner (about 3:30 pm), a hawk
flew in and perched on a shrub outside our dining room window. The
shrub has berries and is usually packed with House Sparrows. The hawk
flew in twice. It actually just flew in again (4:00 pm) while I am
typing this. I was able to see it well enough to know it is an immature
sharp-shinned hawk. It jumped down once, probably to catch a house
sparrow. Since it is back again, it must still be attempting to catch
one.
This area is Ross Township in Butler County. It is a dense residential
area but there are many species of birds here.
Nice holiday treat for a close view of a hawk.
