We visited The Conneaut Sandspit Area yesterday afternoon, Monday, from about 3PM to 5PM. What a beautiful day, seventy degrees and sunshine. From Saturday to yesterday, the water level of Conneaut Harbor was noticeably lower, once again, with more and more tires becoming visible in the approach to the The Sandspit Bay Area. How much lower will and can the pool elevation of Lake Erie go? Birding wise, The Sandspit was an ornithological desert yesterday afternoon; with the least amount of birds we have ever seen here, the only shorebird being a single Lesser Yellowlegs. Amazingly there were very few gulls on the sandspit, with the breakwalls devoid of any birdlife. The only waterfowl were a spattering of Mallards, Coots, and Canada Geese. With the lack of avian life, we decided to take advantage of the good weather, and make the twenty minute trek and rock scramble out to the lighthouse. Upon our arrival at the lighthouse we were thrilled and surprised to be greeted by our bird of the day, a Winter Wren. If you decide to go to the lightouse, the suggested access is to look for the big yellow spot on the breakwall, cross the shallow water at this location, carefully climb up onto the top of the breakwall, and head on out. It is an easy sidewalk like surface on top of the breakwall most of the way, but there are three areas that create interesting negotiable challenges. Photos of the present sandspit conditions and the top of the breakwall can be provided upon request.
