Stopped at East 72nd Street for an hour this
afternoon. A number of waterfowl were in the area,
taking advantage of the easy fishing. So easy, in
fact, that it had turned most of the diving species
into dabblers - most of them were just plucking fish
from the surface. A few "half-hardy" species, perhaps
of interest to you January listers included:
Green-winged Teal (1f), Northern Pintail (5m),
Northern Shoveler (1f), Gadwall (3m, 1f), and Ruddy
Duck (2m).
And, of course, there were a good number of
"white-winged" gull sp. present, as well:
Thayer's 1 1st
Glaucous 2 1st, 2nd
Iceland 5 all 1st
Lesser Black-backed 2 3rd, ad - I usually fail to
even mention this species, but they have been a bit
thin here, as of late
Bring on that ice!
