To All Birders:
The Ohio Bird Records Committee (OBRC) is making a special effort to document the breeding successes of Ohio Trumpeter Swans (TRUS) for this 2018 breeding season, and we are asking for your help, as follows:- If/when you see a Trumpeter Swan family (parent or parents with baby Cygnets), please report these sightings to e-Bird, to any of the birding Facebook groups, to the Ohio Birds list-serve, or to the OBRC (see the OOS Website). We will be monitoring all of the above for these reports.- For each report, it is important to include the date and location, as well as the number of parents and cygnets. If possible, also include a 'family' photo (even cell phone photos), and if one or both parents have neck or other bands, try to record or photograph the band numbers/letters and band color. Later reports of the same family are also important. How many of these cygnets will survive until they can fly?
We are also focusing on WHERE TRUS is now successfully breeding in Ohio. We are currently informed of nesting pairs mostly in the NW Ohio Lake Erie marshes, and are seeking information for areas in NE Ohio (including the Grand River WA and Mosquito Lake area, etc.), E Central Ohio (including habitat all along the Killbuck Marshes and Funk WA, etc.), W Central Ohio (including Killdeer Plains WA, Big Island WA, Mercer WA, etc.), S and W Ohio (including Miami Whitewater Wetlands, the Rocky Fork and Paint Creek areas, etc.) as well as ANY other location in Ohio! Any and all information is welcomed. This and other sources of TRUS breeding range survey information (past and present) may result in a future Ohio checklist designation change for this species; from review-list to non-review-list. Please note that this post and others will hopefully reach most of the new and veteran Ohio birders. But just in case, we are also sending this information to a list of veteran Ohio birders for whom we have contact information. It is hard to know or be in touch with all of the many current Ohio birders, with all of the many Facebook pages and other means of reporting Ohio bird sightings.
Thanks in advance for your contributions!
