I was at East 72nd Street from around 12:00 until 4:00. There was a lot of
turnover of gulls throughout the period. I ended up with 8 species,1 hybrid
and two unidentified birds. Here is a brief summary:
Bonaparte's gull- 1 adult
Ring-billed gull- common
Herring gull- abundant
Thayer's gull- 2 (1 2nd cycle and one adult)
Kumlien's Iceland gull- 4 (2 2nd cycle, 1 3rd cycle, 1 adult)
Lesser black-backed gull- 7 (2 1st cycle and 5 adults)
Glaucous gull- 5 (2 1st cycle, 1 3rd cycle, 2 adults)
Great black-backed gull- common
Great-black-backed gull x herring gull- 1 adult
Dark mantled herring gull- 1 adult (This bird looked a bit like a Vega
gull. Much slimmer thinner build than the typical Great-black-backed gull x
herring gull hybrids that we have been seeing.)
Ring-billed/Common gull ?- 1 1st winter bird (this bird was coarsely barred
on its head, chest and belly. The rump was barred as was the undertail
coverts. The Tail band was broad as in a young herring gull rather than the
typical ring-billed tail band. Not sure if this was just an odd marked
ring-billed gull or what.) I posted some photos of this bird at:
