The weather was pretty nasty this morning with around a foot of snow
falling. I was not able to even see the lake until about 11:00 and when it
cleared up I could see that nice now extends about 3/4 mile from shore.
There was a lot of gulls moving and a few flocks of common mergs. The only
bird of note was an adult Iceland gull. The ice on the lake was pretty
loose and broken up yet. A south wind can blow it out pretty quickly.
My feeders were a different story. There was a huge amount of activity
today due to all the snow. I ended up with 26 species using the feeder
including both sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks that hung around most of the
day. The best feeder birds were a gray catbird, 2 eastern towhees, a pine
siskin and a common redpoll. The catbird was a first for me as a winter
feeder bird. I was feeding on berries and suet.
