I checked a few areas along the Scioto River west of Columbus, focusing on
Marble Cliff and Griggs Dam park. Most of the river is ice-free, and still
has decent numbers of waterfowl waiting for other areas to thaw out. These
included:
Canada Geese - large flocks at both sites
CommonGoldeneye - Marble Cliff had 5 while the river below Griggs Dam had
12+
CommonMerganser - 2 females were at Marble Cliff, while 1 male and 5
females graced Griggs
Red-br.Mergansers - 2 were on the river below Griggs Dam
Hooded Merganser - strangely, the least common merganser, with only a few
at each spot.
Ring-necked Ducks - big flock of nearly 200 birds along the river at Marble
Cliff
Lesser Scaup - 1 male mixed in with the Ring-necks
Redhead - 12 males mixed in with the Ring-necks
Not much else around; landbirds were unexceptional other than scattered
flocks of Blue Jays, which was unusual along the river here.
