There was an adult California gull on the mudflat at Conneaut this afternoon
around 4:30. I tried to turn around to get photos but it and several other
birds flew and landed outside the breakwall. I also had 4 dunlin and a
lesser yellowlegs. The only waterfowl out in the harbor was a family group
of 12 common mergansers.
At Lakeshore park in Ashtabula there was a flock of 60+ brant just inside
the east end of the breakwall. I missed the 300+ that probably flew by my
house today so these were a consolation.
I finally made it over to Mosquito and got the western grebe. Western grebe
is a bird that I have chased many times through the years and always seemed
to have missed. After hearing that Haans had it at 11:30 I felt pretty good
about finally getting it. I got there and checked the marina, no bird. I
walked out past the marina concession and scanned the open water, no bird.
I had that sinking field that it got me again. I scanned the open water
again and there it was. It was out in the middle of the lake probably
trying to hide from me. It was a distant look, but no doubt. It was too
far for photos, but I'll leave that for another day. I've seen them out
west, but this was a state bird for me. Glad to finally get a nemesis out
of the way.
