A Harris's Sparrow showed up at an Amish home southeast of Apple Creek around
noon today (Wed). I was there in the afternoon and took some photos. The bird
was there the entire time except when a Sharp-shinned Hawk came in and perched
above the feeders. The bird is with White-crowned Sparrows and spends time in
some brambles and then comes out and feeds on the ground.
The address is 9041 Bear Hollow Road, Apple Creek. This is a short, one-mile
road. See DeLorme P 44 (2007 version). Take U.S. Rt. 250 southeast from Wooster
to Apple Creek and on to Fountain Nook Road. Turn right (south) and Bear Hollow
is the first road on the right. 9041 is located close to a large communication
tower and the house is on the south side of the road.
Birders are welcome but please remember they are Amish - photos of the birds
are fine but not the people...The feeders are on the east side of the house and
if you go to the front door, you probably can watch from inside. This is the
Robert Troyer family and the young birder who found the bird is Andy. Another
birder, Marty Troyer lives across the road.
