Before the rain hit in earnest, I stopped at several access points along the lower portion of this reservoir northeast of Columbus. I started at the dam (and the nearby Nature Trail), then stopped at Maxtown launch area, Mudhen Marsh, the Sunbury causeway, and the Twin Bridges area. Waterbird migrants were virtually non-existant, but there was still some good movement of temperate landbird migrants, with a few neotropicals. Notables included:
Great Egret - 1 with breeding plumes at Mudhen Marsh (they don't nest anywhere nearby)
Green Heron - 1 flyover at Mudhen Marsh
cormorants - small numbers at most stops along reservoir; virtually the only waterbird at several stops.
Caspian Terns - 2 flying over the dam early
Swifts - small numbers at many places around the reservoir
Swallows - large numbers of Tree, Barn, and Cliff foraging over the lake surface. Smaller numbers of Rough-wings close to shore, and a few Purple Martins off the Sunbury causeway.
Vireos - the only 1 was a calling White-eyed at Mudhen Marsh
Gnatcatchers - another big day for them, with over 30 in a bit less than 3 hours
Kinglets - still plenty of Ruby-crowns, with birds at all stops. A single Golden-crown was still at Mudhen Marsh.
Hermit Thrush - only 1, at Maxtown launch woods
GRAY CATBIRD - 1 singing in shrubs along the Hoover Nature Trail (my FOS)
Brown Thrasher - singing birds along the Hoover Nature Trail and at Maxtown launch woods
Warblers - small numbers, with modest diversity:
Yellow - 2 singing in riparian zone below dam
Yellow-throated - 2 singing in woods east of the dam
BLACKBURNIAN - 1 singing along the Hoover Nature Trail (FOS)
Yellow-rumped Warblers - most common warbler, at every stop.
Pine Warbler - 1 singing at Sunbury causeway
Palm Warbler - 2 in Maxtown launch area woods
Ovenbird - 1 singing in Central College ravine below the dam
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 singing in Central College ravine below the dam
