Six of us spent much of the day along the Erie shore. Waterfowl were
scarce indeed; a total of eight red-breasted mergansers tells that tale.
At the Cedar Pt. Chaussee, we had 46 great blue herons (probably as many
more hidden from view along the Sheldon side), ~20 black-bellied
plovers, as many dunlins, a dozen pectoral sandpipers, and a least
sandpiper. Good habitat there. We did surprise ourselves with gulls.
Herring, ring-billed, great black-backed and Bonaparte's were seen at
nearly every stop, but in addition we had the following:
glaucous gull along the main Cedar Pt. causeway
lesser black-backed gulls: one at Huron, one at Avon Lake, and four at
the Oberlin Reservoir, all adults
laughing gull: one at Lorain harbor
Franklin's gull: two at the Oberlin Rezrvoir.
We also had eight common terns at Lorain. The wind came from the south
all day long.
