I spent part of the morning hiking around these two Westerville birding areas.
The overcase, windy conditions kept migrants from flying, so many birds were grounded,
Only the irrepressible Chimney Swifts were aloft, with a flock of 60+ playing in
the updrafts off the dam. The riparian area below the dam had small cluster of
migrants, including 7 warbler species (Parula and Black-thr.Blue were the most unusual),
along with Pewees, Waxwings, and Robins. Above the dam, the reservoir had little
other than a few gulls, although 65+ turkey vultures were sitting along the rocky
shoreline.

At Inniswood, the nut crop is very good, with dropping hickory nuts and beechnuts
making repetitive plops along the trail. This bounty attracted a good mix of mast-loving
birds, including 30+ Blue Jays, 8-9 Red-bellied woodpeckers, 5-6 Flickers, and 12+
Tufted Titmice, along with the usual flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, and kinglets.
Warblers and other forest migrants were less evident here, but the forest is tall
and challenging to bird.

Rob
