With most of South Bass Island enclosed in ice, the open water on the far
east end of the island at the Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve was full of
waterfowl just before sundown. No sign of the belted-kingfisher who had been
there a few days before.
xxx Tundra Swans
xxx Canada Geese
xxx Mallards
xxxx Common Goldeneye
xxx Buffleheads
xxx Scaup sp.
xxx Redheads
xx Canvasback
xx Red-breasted mergansers
xx Ring-necked Ducks
1 Horned Grebe
3 Long-tailed Ducks
There were a couple of pintail with other species off of Chapman's Point.
Yesterday before freeze up, there were Great Black-backed, Herring, Ring-
billed, and Bonaparte's gulls, double-crested cormorants, and a hooded
merganser with the goldeneyes, buffleheads and mallards in the harbor near
Alligator Bar.
