OHHH ---OUCH!!! Can they digest the shell? I have never heard of a bird
eating the shell of a turtle. I could see maybe pecking the meat out of the
shell...but....????? would they regurgitate the shell like fish bones?

Subject: Re: [Ohio-birds] Great Blue Heron Diet

Regarding Great Blue Heron predation on Pied-billed Grebe.

I saw a great blue heron pierce and swallow a turtle that was at least
4"-5" across. You could see the turtle going down the herons neck and
then the heron let out a groan like I have never heard. I bet it was
wishing that it didn't swallow that turtle.
