This morning Shaune Skinner, Jim Skinner (Shaune’s dad) and I birded around
the east shore of Hoover Reservoir by boat, then later while on the way home
I made a quick stop at Mudhen Marsh. It was a beautiful morning to be out on
Hoover with moderate temperatures, just a slight breeze, clear skies and calm
water. Bird activity was slower than expected, but this may be in part due
to the number of species we observed feeding hatchlings. Parental duties call
before showing off for birders.
Cliff Swallows were in great abundance and there seem to be more Belted
Kingfisher’s around than normal. The water in many inlets along the east shore
was very high, again leaving us to wonder how many Prothonotary Warbler nest
cavities may have been flooded out. We did manage to locate more Prothonotary
Warbler territories, but they all seemed to be high above the water. Immature
Double-crested Cormorants were a common sight as they probably heard of the
fate of some of their older generation up on Lake Eire.
At Mudhen Marsh I observed 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, several Yellow
Warblers, one Common Yellowthroat, Cedar Waxwings, Indigo Buntings and a
Yellow-throated Vireo.
