After reading Rob Thorn's reports from previous days, I had a look around my local stretch of the Scioto River in Columbus. Other obligations today prevent me from doing a very thorough search and count, but the trees are dripping with migrants today. From what I can tell it is more quantity than variety right now. Yellow-rumps, of course, dominate the scene and are pretty much everywhere. Ruby-cr Kinglets, and Yellow, Palm and Nashville Warblers are also numerous, with 2 or 3 each of N Parula, Black-thr Green, and Ovenbird also noted here. The parulas seem to be migrants just moving through and not hanging around in one spot. Last year I was thrilled to have nesting N Parulas and Prothonotary Warblers in my backyard. They were last seen in July carrying food to nests. From what I can tell, neither of those species has returned on territory yet. It will be interesting to see if last year's apparent expansion of nesting parulas in central Ohio repeats itself this year afte
r the harsh early spring, since I would have thought they'd be back by now. Resident singing Yellow-throated Warblers and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers have all been back for a while along the Scioto, and the females have also recently arrived. Spotted Sandpipers are also conspicuous along the Scioto now.
