I hit up Hoover this morning hoping to beat the heat, but no. It was really
warm by the time I got there at 8, and it only got warmer. Mudflats
continue to spread and more shoreline is exposed every time I visit. This
week I saw a total of 12 shorebird species, plus a few other goodies. If
you want to see shorebirds, Hoover will be the place this fall! I visited
the east shore from the yacht club north, as well as the boardwalk and Wiese
Rd. Species seen:
Killdeer: probably 500 or so birds, I stopped counting
Semipalmated Plover: 16
Spotted Sandpiper: ~45
Pectoral Sandpiper: ~50
Solitary Sandpiper: ~30
Lesser Yellowlegs: ~55
Greater Yellowlegs: 12
WILLET: 4 - all were on the east shore near the southward-jutting peninsula
Least Sandpiper: ~40 - most were seen from the boardwalk
Semipalmated Sandpiper: 7
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER: 1 - near the Willets
STILT SANDPIPER: 2 - a long walk from the parking area on Wiese Rd.
Also seen were 18 Caspian Terns, 3 Forster's Terns, and 1 Bonaparte's Gull.
Good Birding,
John
